Why Christian Education?
The Benefits of a Christ-Centered Education

Choosing where your child goes to school is about more than academics. For Christian families, it is also a decision about who will help shape their child’s understanding of truth, purpose, character, relationships, and faith during thousands of hours spent at school.

Christian education combines strong academics with a biblical worldview, allowing students to learn about God’s world while growing in their understanding of God’s Word. At a Christian school, faith is not limited to Bible class or chapel. Ideally, it shapes how students approach academics, relationships, athletics, the arts, service, leadership, and the questions they will encounter in the world around them.

At NorthPointe Christian Schools in Grand Rapids, Michigan, our mission is to equip students to impact their world for Jesus Christ. We partner with families from preschool through 12th grade to help students grow academically and spiritually, discover their God-given gifts, think critically, and learn to use those gifts in service to others.

What is Christian education?

Christian education is an approach to learning in which academic instruction, spiritual formation, and a biblical worldview work together.

A Christian school doesn’t simply add prayer, Bible class, or chapel to a traditional school experience. The goal is to help students understand that faith relates to every area of life.

Students can study science while developing wonder for God’s creation. They can examine history while discussing human nature, justice, brokenness, and redemption. Literature can prompt conversations about truth, morality, and what it means to be human. Athletics can become an opportunity to practice perseverance, humility, teamwork, and integrity.

At NorthPointe Christian, this approach reflects our mission: “Equipping students to impact their world for Jesus Christ.”

The goal isn’t to shelter students from difficult ideas or questions. It is to prepare them to encounter those questions with wisdom, discernment, and a foundation of biblical truth.

Why do families choose Christian education?

Families choose Christian education for many reasons, but one of the most significant is alignment.

Parents are a child’s first and most influential teachers. A Christian school can come alongside the home and church so students hear a consistent message about who they are, what is true, and how their lives can be used for God’s purposes.

That partnership is particularly meaningful because faith formation doesn’t happen in only one setting.

According to Pew Research Center’s 2023–24 Religious Landscape Study, 70% of Christian parents with children under 18 living at home reported engaging in at least one of several forms of religious education with their children, including praying or reading Scripture together, participating in religious education programs, or choosing homeschooling or private religious schooling.¹

Christian education gives families another environment in which those conversations can continue throughout a child’s week.

What are the benefits of Christian education?

Every Christian school is different, and no school can guarantee a child’s future choices or faith. However, a Christ-centered education can intentionally provide students with several important opportunities.

1. Students learn to connect faith with everyday life.

One of the defining characteristics of Christian education is biblical integration.

Rather than separating faith from academics, students are encouraged to understand God’s truth as relevant to every subject and every part of life.

At NorthPointe Christian, students are encouraged to ask important questions:

  • What is true?
  • Who did God create me to be?
  • How should I treat others?
  • What gifts has God given me?
  • How can I use those gifts to serve?
  • How should my faith shape the decisions I make?

This prepares students not simply to know information, but to evaluate ideas thoughtfully and approach the world through a biblical lens.

Does Christian education help students develop their faith?

Christian education can play an important role in a student’s spiritual formation, particularly when school, home, and church work together.

Research suggests that the environments surrounding children during their formative years matter.

Pew Research Center’s 2025 research found a clear relationship between religious upbringing and religious life in adulthood. For example, among adults who said religion was very important to their family while growing up, 55% said religion remained very important in their own lives as adults. Pew is careful to note that a religious upbringing does not guarantee a particular adult faith outcome.²

Research specifically examining school sectors also points to meaningful associations.

The Cardus Education Survey has studied outcomes among graduates of public, Catholic, Protestant, nonreligious independent, and homeschool education. Its 2026 Enduring Faith report found that, even after controlling for demographic differences, faith-based schooling was positively correlated with stronger faith-formation outcomes.³

That distinction matters: Christian education cannot manufacture faith. Faith is ultimately personal, and students will make their own decisions.

What a Christian school can do is intentionally create an environment where students regularly encounter Scripture, Christian mentors, prayer, worship, thoughtful questions, and opportunities to put their faith into action.

How does Christian education prepare students academically?

Christian education should pursue both spiritual formation and academic excellence—not one at the expense of the other.

Students need to be prepared for college, careers, trades, ministry, family life, and service. They also need the ability to think critically as they encounter increasingly complex information and competing ideas.

Cardus research comparing school sectors found that Protestant-school graduates were more likely than public-school graduates to positively evaluate their schools in areas including relationships with teachers and preparation for postsecondary academic success and careers.⁴

At NorthPointe Christian, rigorous academics are paired with student support and opportunities that allow students to discover how they learn best.

NPC reports an average class size of 23 students, a 97% college acceptance rate, and more than half of its senior class participating in dual college enrollment. Students can also explore opportunities ranging from Spanish Immersion and robotics to fine arts, athletics, support services, and career-focused learning.⁵

For students who thrive outside a traditional classroom model, NorthPointe Christian’s Big Picture Learning high school program combines student-driven projects with real-world internships. Students spend two days each week gaining experience in professional settings connected to their interests.⁶

The purpose of academic preparation is bigger than earning a grade. We want students to discover their gifts and develop the knowledge, discipline, curiosity, and wisdom to use those gifts well.

Why do teachers matter in Christian education?

Teachers are one of the most important influences on a student’s daily school experience. In Christian education, teachers have the opportunity to be both educators and Christian mentors.

Students watch how adults respond to success, disappointment, conflict, difficult questions, and people who think differently than they do.

That means faith is taught not only through lessons, but through relationships.

At NorthPointe Christian, 100% of staff identify as Christians who are passionate about living out their faith.⁵ Teachers are encouraged to help students grow academically while modeling what it looks like to follow Christ in everyday life.

As one NorthPointe Christian graduate shared:

“The Christian teachings I learned from [NPC] have set me far ahead of my peers when it comes to knowing, reading, and understanding the Bible.”
— Angela B., NorthPointe Christian Class of 2016

Another former student wrote to a NorthPointe teacher after beginning college:

“Your class last year has really prepared me well for college.”
— Erin, former NorthPointe Christian student

Those relationships can extend far beyond a student’s time in a particular classroom.

Does Christian education prepare students for the real world?

A strong Christian education should prepare students to engage the world—not hide from it.

Students will encounter viewpoints that challenge what they believe. They will face ethical questions that don’t have easy answers. They will interact with people from different cultures, backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences.

Preparing students for those realities requires more than telling them what Christians believe. Students need opportunities to understand why they believe it, ask difficult questions, listen carefully, think critically, and communicate truth with both conviction and grace.

At NorthPointe Christian, that preparation can look different depending on the student.

Spanish Immersion students develop bilingual skills while learning to appreciate other cultures and preparing to communicate across cultural boundaries. NorthPointe’s Spanish Immersion pathway begins in preschool and can continue through high school.⁷

Home & School Hybrid students combine learning at home with classroom instruction and a Christ-centered school community.⁸

High school students can pursue traditional academics, college coursework, internships, athletics, fine arts, robotics, Spanish Immersion, and other opportunities designed to develop their individual gifts.

Different students may take different paths, but the purpose remains the same: preparing them to use what God has given them wherever He calls them next.

How can Christian education help students discover their purpose?

Christian education starts with a foundational belief: every student is created by God with inherent worth and unique gifts.

That changes the purpose of education.

Success isn’t measured only by GPA, college admission, athletic achievement, career status, or income. Those accomplishments can be valuable, but Christian education asks another question:

How can I use what God has given me to serve Him and others?

For one student, that may eventually mean becoming an engineer. For another, a teacher, missionary, electrician, nurse, business owner, artist, parent, pastor, designer, or first responder.

Education helps students develop their abilities. Christian education also asks them to consider what those abilities are for.

As one NorthPointe Christian graduate reflected:

“We are particularly grateful for the opportunities we had at NorthPointe to use and develop our gifts. Thank you for not only educating our minds, but our hearts as well.”
— Moriah, NorthPointe Christian graduate

Is Christian school worth the cost?

For many families, this is one of the hardest questions.

Christian education is a significant financial investment, and whether it is the right investment depends on a family’s priorities, circumstances, and educational needs.

Families considering private Christian education should ask what they want their child’s school experience to reinforce each day—not only academically, but spiritually and relationally.

One NorthPointe Christian parent of graduates described the decision this way:

“I would choose NorthPointe Christian Schools for my kids over again in a heartbeat.”

Cost should also not automatically prevent a family from exploring Christian education.

For the 2026–27 school year, NorthPointe Christian offers need-based tuition assistance for qualifying full-time K–12 and Home & School Hybrid families. Eligible full-time students may qualify for assistance of up to 50% of tuition. Additional cost-saving opportunities are also available.⁹

Families interested in NorthPointe should talk with the Admissions team about tuition and financial assistance rather than assuming a Christian education is financially out of reach.

What should parents look for when choosing a Christian school?

Not every private school is a Christian school, and not every Christian school approaches education in exactly the same way.

When evaluating a school, parents may want to ask:

  • Is Scripture integrated throughout learning or primarily reserved for Bible class?
  • Do teachers personally model the faith the school teaches?
  • How does the school partner with parents?
  • Are students encouraged to ask difficult questions?
  • How does the school define academic excellence?
  • How are students with different learning needs supported?
  • What opportunities exist in academics, arts, athletics, service, and leadership?
  • How does the school help students discover their individual gifts?
  • What does spiritual formation look like at different ages?
  • How are graduates prepared for college, careers, relationships, and life beyond high school?

Perhaps most importantly, visit the school. Sit in a classroom. Talk with teachers and administrators. Ask students about their experience. Pay attention to how people treat one another.

A school’s mission should be visible in its culture, not simply printed on its website.

Frequently Asked Questions About Christian Education

What is the main purpose of Christian education?

The purpose of Christian education is to educate the whole child—academically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally—through a biblical worldview. Christian schools seek to help students develop knowledge and skills while understanding their identity, purpose, and responsibility to God and others.

What is the difference between a Christian school and a private school?

A private school is independently operated rather than being part of a public school system. A Christian school is a type of private school that intentionally incorporates Christian beliefs and a biblical worldview into its educational philosophy, curriculum, culture, and student experience.

Is Christian school only about Bible classes and chapel?

No. While Bible instruction and chapel are often important parts of Christian schooling, Christ-centered education is intended to integrate faith throughout the school experience, including academics, relationships, athletics, fine arts, leadership, service, and extracurricular activities.

Does attending a Christian school guarantee that my child will remain a Christian?

No. A school cannot guarantee a student’s personal faith. Research does, however, suggest associations between religious upbringing, faith-based schooling, and later religious practice. A Christian school can provide an environment where students regularly encounter Scripture, Christian mentors, worship, prayer, biblical teaching, and opportunities to explore their faith.² ³

Can Christian schools provide strong academics?

Yes. Faith formation and academic rigor do not need to compete. Strong Christian schools intentionally pursue both. Parents should evaluate an individual school’s curriculum, outcomes, faculty, support services, class offerings, and opportunities when determining whether it will meet their child’s academic needs.

How do I know if Christian education is right for my family?

Start by identifying what matters most to your family educationally and spiritually. Research schools, review their beliefs and academic programs, ask about tuition and financial assistance, and visit in person. Seeing classrooms and meeting teachers can help you determine whether a school’s culture aligns with what you hope for your child.

A Partnership Between Home, Church, and School

Parenting is hard, and choosing a school can feel like one of the biggest decisions parents make.

Christian education doesn’t replace the role of parents or the local church. At its best, it partners with them.

When home, church, and school reinforce a shared biblical foundation, students have regular opportunities to see how faith connects with learning, relationships, decisions, gifts, and everyday life.

At NorthPointe Christian Schools, that partnership is at the heart of what we do.

For more than 50 years, NorthPointe Christian has served families in the greater Grand Rapids area with one central mission:

Equipping students to impact their world for Jesus Christ.
