Why International Students Call NPC Home
“Why do international students choose NorthPointe and West Michigan?”
I’ve been surprised by that question, posed especially by those in our school community. I’ve wanted to ask them right back,
“Why wouldn’t they?” There are so many reasons NorthPointe is the perfect place for International students.
With a welcoming small-school atmosphere, a great, safe location right by beautiful natural charms (including the Great Lakes), an internationally-focused staff, and a mission that thrives in an international environment, we are a school that promises enriching and powerful experiences for students from all over the world.
As a school, our goal is to “equip our students to reach their world for Christ.” What better way to do that than to have students from “the world” in the seats next to them. As American students learn and grow, understanding what China is really like because “Sam” is from there or seeing the Ukraine war in a new light because they have a friend who lived it, everyone wins. The curiosity and learning that happens on both sides – both the international student and the American, is a powerful tool for learning and growth.
As a city, Grand Rapids offers so much. It has a vibrant downtown with lots of energy, but is near so many trails and parks full of nature and beauty. It’s even just a 30-minute drive from the stunning beaches of the Great Lakes. On top of all of that, Grand Rapid’s safety and charm makes it an attractive choice for international parents looking to make a wise choice for their students.
I have also been amazed at the eagerness with which our staff welcome students from all over the world. Many staff have become host families for students, have welcomed them to share stories of their home country in the classroom, and gladly reach out and help them with their English or whatever other needs they have. International students can feel known and loved at NPC.
As NPC fulfills its mission, International students play a key role in our student body both now and into the future. We pray that all students will feel known, safe, loved, and able to grow in their understanding of God and of the world.
