Faith Statement

I believe in the only holy, triune God, creator of the cosmos, and savior of my soul.  It is hard to comprehend how a God so great would desire a personal relationship with me.  Yet daily he extends his loving mercies to me, a sinner, in need of his grace and salvation. I am thankful for my Christian upbringing, Christian schooling, and church community. What a rich blessing! However, my trust is not in these, but only in the blood of Christ – his death and resurrection! Throughout my life, God has continuously drawn me closer to him by the work of his Holy Spirit in me.  His pursuit of my heart, his complete forgiveness of my sins, his desire to make me more like him, astound me.  I cannot comprehend his great love, patience, and sovereignty.  It is my prayer that I will live in gratitude, service, and love because of all he has done for me. Image Mandate (Gen.1:26-28). “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him.” Powerful words with powerful implication! Each human is worthy of dignity and respect.  In my classroom, I want students to see the beauty of the people and cultures that God has created. It is difficult to remove ourselves from the ethnocentricity of our cultural group, but when we do, we have a clearer picture of God’s true nature and likeness.  I want to challenge my students to see outside of the bubble we have subconsciously created in order to embrace our global brothers and sister in Christ. Love Mandate (Matt.22:37-38). Love God and love our neighbor. It sounds so simple yet so hard to do because of the brokenness of our hearts and our world. But Christ loved us first, he put his spirit in us, and that is how we can love. It is important for students to practice love in the classroom.  In our daily interactions with one another, students are required to show respect. It is important to learn how to love even when we disagree, or come from a different background.  This can be felt in our own community but also as we study unique cultures that are new to us. Mission Mandate (Matt.28:18-20). “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” Two words stand out, “make” and “all.” Students who are learning a second language come to realize that God has made a big world with places and people that do not look or sound just like them.  Yet, God cares for all and sends his gospel message to all so that all who receive it may belong to him. And for me as a teacher, the word “make” reminds me of the responsibility given to me to teach and love those who come in my classroom.  It is my prayer and hope that my students will leave my classroom knowing and loving both God and his people more deeply.
