Stepping Into the Past:
Experiencing a First-Century Synagogue

Experiencing History Firsthand

Matt Bell, our teacher and spiritual life director, recently led sophomore students through an immersive simulation of a first-century synagogue. This hands-on experience provided a glimpse into what it would have been like to attend a service in Jesus’ time, highlighting the synagogue’s role as a place of worship, learning, and community gathering.

Synagogues in the first century were central to Jewish life, serving as places of prayer, study, and discussion of the Torah. They were often built in prominent locations and featured benches along the walls for important community members, while others sat on the floor. Services included the reading of Scripture, prayers, and teachings from visiting rabbis—traditions that Jesus himself participated in, as seen in his teachings and healings in synagogues throughout Galilee.

Watch and learn about the synagogue setup as Mr. Bell demonstrates a typical Sabbath service.

Through this unique experience, students not only learned about the historical and cultural significance of synagogues but also gained a deeper appreciation for the context in which Jesus taught. By stepping into the past, they were able to connect their faith to its historical roots, making biblical events come alive in a meaningful way.

At NorthPointe Christian High School, we are committed to providing a dynamic and engaging education that brings learning to life.
