Marketplace, an interdisciplinary economy project, provides real-world learning for 6th-8th graders.

What is Marketplace?

Students have the opportunity to learn entrepreneurship, economics, and citizenship concepts through project-based learning. The unit culminates with an authentic Marketplace event where students sell a product or service to the community. Local business leaders – from Meijer, Chick-fil-A, Amway, and more – inspire students throughout the semester. Cornerstone University students mentor companies and present the Enactus Award to a stand-out company. Additional student awards include Most Charitable, Most Lucrative, Best Biblically-Based Mission, and Artisan Award.

Who's the Boss?

8th graders serve as CEO of their own company. They decide on the company name, product/service, and prepare an informative and persuasive speech for the 6th and 7th graders. From wood signage to homemade candles to food stands, there is no shortage of unique businesses. Students incorporate a business plan, consider business ethics, and choose a service or donation project. Collaboration across the grade levels serves to enhance projects as well as build community.

Marketing Gurus

7th graders serve as General Manager of Marketing for the 8th grade company that hires them. Prior to being hired, they develop a cover letter, prepare a resume and interview for their position with the 8th grade CEO. Students create a logo and advertisements that are used on facebook or in morning announcements. Local marketing professionals from the community coach students on marketing best practices.

The New Hires

6th graders serve as the Manager of Operations. Prior to being hired, they practice writing cover letters and prepare resumes. Students collaborate across the grade levels and expand their knowledge of what it takes to be an entrepreneur.
