What We can Learn from the Pilgrims

Each week, our Middle School teachers take turns creating 'Dinner Time Questions' to purposefully engage students and their families outside the classroom in discussion.

Mr. Duckworth shared his reflection questions for this week below. How can you incorporate these questions in your own family dinner time?


In Social Studies we have been finishing our Unit 1 with a closer look at the Pilgrims and why they came to America. The Mayflower’s epic voyage was marked by many “tests” of their faith on a huge scale. They gave up possessions and jobs to pay their way across. Additionally, storms blew them off course to a new place.

William Bradford wrote of this critical time:

“Being thus arrived at a good harbor, and brought safely to land, they fell on their knees and blessed the God of heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof.”

As we enter the Thanksgiving season in a couple of weeks, let us consider what these early Pioneers could teach us:

1. Be Strong in Your Faith: The Pilgrims had unwavering faith. They found fulfillment in Him. What things stand in the way of you whole-heartedly following Christ? What things, other than Christ, do we seek fulfillment? Why don’t these give real fulfillment?

2. Be Disciplined: The Pilgrims' lives ordered everything around God’s commandments. What areas of our lives demonstrate good discipline? What areas of our lives need more discipline or “God-centeredness”? A few areas to consider: prayer, Bible reading, social media, computer time, language, exercise, school work, etc.

3. Care about Others: The Pilgrims believed every person was made in the image of God. They showed deep concern for Chief Samoset and the native Americans. The Pilgrims sought to make their new world better by fair dealings with neighbors. What is something you could do for the neighbors who live next to you that would bring them joy?

4. Dream Great Dreams: The Pilgrims dreamed of a world where God would rule the hearts of men. The strength of their spirit was forged by regular habits of devotion. What gift has God given me? How could God use this in a great way to change your school, neighborhood, church, community, etc.? (Imagine big!)

Raising Youth in the Digital Age

I liked NorthPointe's mission statement 20 years ago and still do.  

I frequently use it as a quick test of activities I plan in teaching young people to use technology. I ask myself, “Is this helping them to grow in a way that they can better impact their world for Jesus?”  It has also guided us throughout the implementation of NPC’s one-to-one MacBook program as we consider how technology might or might not be helping us accomplish our mission.  

In my role as NorthPointe’s Technology Integration Specialist, I have a front row seat to observe how young people use technology.

They are always connected: hanging out, doing homework, sitting in class. Their music, their photos, their friends--it seems as if their whole life is in“the cloud.” It’s not the device; it’s the connection that matters.  The kids stay connected even when most of us are sleeping. I’m no longer surprised when I get an email sent at 3 AM from a student who wants access to a website from which they’ve been blocked.  They just have to connect to their peers and what's out there.  It’s their reality, their world.

As parents and teachers, we tend to see the device as a problem. Some of us want to control it: take it away, limit screen time, block access to apps and websites, etc. Others of us throw up our hands and are tempted to do nothing. We know we need to protect our kids, e.g., “Don’t touch the stove.  Look before crossing the street.” But controlling devices seems harder, more confusing, and constantly changing.

Even though our children are skilled in using this digital world, we still need to help them navigate it. They need our help to figure out how to impact their world and how the virtual world is impacting them.  They need our guidance in discerning right from wrong, good from bad, what builds up and what destroys. They need us to show them how to interact with others appropriately, how to protect themselves, and how to use their time wisely. Like most lessons in life, helping our kids navigate a digital world takes time and effort.

Start with prayer.

It seems like a Sunday School answer, but the Lord gives wisdom to those that ask.

Then set age appropriate boundaries. Internet filters are a wise place to start, but internet filters aren’t perfect, so I suggest having younger kids use their devices where you can occasionally look at the screen.

Like it or not, our children become older, more independent, and need to make wise choices with no teachers or parents around.  We need to get them ready for those choices. You can use something like Covenant Eyes which is a great tool for Internet accountability.

Accountability needs to be a two-way street (otherwise it’s just spying), with sons accountable with their dads if possible. As they grow in maturity and in their ability to discern, you can give them more freedom. When they fail, we need to help them learn from their mistakes.

Talking with kids about relationships has never been easy, but the digital age makes it even more critical. Unfortunately, girls need to be told that they should not send nude pictures of themselves to boys; boys need to be told that it is not appropriate to ask for them. It’s good for all of us to remember that a thoughtless comment or an ill advised photo, once posted, is beyond our ability to control and could have consequences we never intended.

Help your children learn that not everything in the digital world is as it appears. That cute 17-year-old guy who just Snapchatted your daughter may really be a 40-year-old predator using a photo he scammed online. Online predators will use guilt and shame to pull your kids into deeper trouble. Build trust with your kids so that they can come to you even if they have made a mistake.

Lastly, model appropriate digital behavior for them. How much time do you spend in social media? Do you text while driving? Do you put your phone away when they need your attention? It’s knowing that what we practice is what students most imitate, which includes how we use our devices.

Parenting has never been easy; at the forefront of the digital age, it sometimes seems even more complex. Yet the digital world is a resource we have to steward.

Even though your kids may know more about the latest digital social trends, they still need so much that they can only get from you.  

Fortunately, you don’t have to understand binary code to pass along what matters in life.

Nerf Guns and Tutus

‘Pick up your room and make your bed’. My kids have this on their daily chore list, and their end result is usually a wrinkly-made bed with books and toys piled on top or jammed in a basket. This was the case when I entered my daughter’s room to find her bed made (sort of) and items that previously cluttered the floor tossed on the worn comforter--two Nerf guns, her Bible, a long white tutu, and her current read, Geronimo Stilton: Los Prehistorratones. I usually don’t think much about the items I find plopped around our house, but I found this eclectic collection intriguing.

Initially, just seeing the Nerf guns next to the tutu made me chuckle--the undeniable influence of three big brothers! But then I noticed a common thread between all of these things: our school, NorthPointe Christian.  

The Bible and chapter book seem like an obvious connection--Christian and education. But at NPC, these books represent more than just Bible verses and learning to read. Academic excellence grounded in biblical truth is how NorthPointe “equips students to impact their world for Christ”.  My children are blessed to have amazing teachers who provide authentic learning experiences and individualized instruction. Teachers who weave biblical truth into every subject, who pray with them, who challenge them to do their very best and keep pushing forward.  

At NorthPointe Christian, students have opportunities to discover their God-given gifts and learn how to use these to bless others. Whether writing or wrestling, baseball or ballet (yes, that’s where the tutu comes in--the NorthPointe Ballet Company’s Summer Showcase recital), my kids learn the lasting lessons of hard work, teamwork, and honoring God through all you do.

As for the Nerf guns--well, no, these did not come from school (nor are they allowed at school!)--these are her brother’s.  My four children recently enjoyed a lively, but friendly, Nerf battle as we celebrated our oldest son’s 20th birthday.  I love how they can still laugh and play together, despite being far apart in age, how they pray for each other, and although they often bicker over the most ridiculous things, my heart is blessed when I hear them say to each other “I love you”.  

The pink Bible was a gift from her oldest brother and his girlfriend (that's why it is pink and has my daughter's name beautifully stamped on it!). Inside he wrote a note to her and highlighted a favorite verse--truly a treasure! These are family values in action. Values taught in our home and reinforced by all they do and learn at school.  

My husband and I are so grateful God led us to NorthPointe Christian Schools, and we are blessed to be part of this loving school community. And although NorthPointe has not taught them how to make a bed with hospital corners, I can't imagine being anywhere else.
