Session 1
Monday, June 9 – Thursday, June 12
 

Ages 6-9 

Chemistry Matters ($60) - Deb Pitsch                                                            9:00 – 10:30 am
Come spend a week exploring the "Creative Chemist" in you! We'll leave the textbooks behind and go beyond the periodic table. We'll burn materials, boil them, blend them, and freeze them to see just what things are and what they do. We'll experiment with mystery reactions and mess with mixtures. We'll create chromatographic circles. Your young chemist won't realize they are learning so much because they'll be having so much fun!!

Math Games ($60) - Emily Pettinga                                                                  10:30 am – noon
Who says math can’t be fun?  We’ll have tons of fun playing games that reinforce what students have already learned. Using board games, card games, and more we’ll practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, decimals, percentages and fractions.   

Art: Time Traveler I ($60) – Deb Pitsch                                                        12:30 – 2:00 pm
Become a Time Traveler through the Art World! We'll visit the Stone Age and create our own personal cave art using only material found in nature. Journey to Egypt and make a Pharaoh mini mural with a "vaguely familiar" face. Travel onto Greece and Rome to create pottery. Michelangelo will teach us the joys of painting while on our backs. Georges Seurat will then demonstrate pointillism as we imitate his techniques to create our own personal T-shirts. Don't worry though about your time travels...we'll make sure we end back at Northpointe in 2008!

What would life be like if you couldn’t see?  What would life be like if you couldn’t think the way you do?  Through the use of activities and games, students will discover the importance of their God given talents and abilities plus students will learn how to use their strengths to help them in school and life. 

 

Ages 10 – 12

Passport to Stories Around the World ($60) - Heather Hendricks                  9:00 – 10:30 am
Come join us as we travel around the world.  Students will read myths, folktales, fairy tales and tall tales from around the world and complete a passport recording the countries that they “visited”.  Students will work on comprehension skills as well as writing skills as they review the stories they have heard.  Techniques from the Institute for Excellence in Writing will be used to “dress-up” and “decorate” their passports.

Shalom! Learn the basics of the language of the Hebrew Bible and discover what has been lost in translation. This course will be taught in three parts and will build on each week.   Adults may register for this class also.  Materials needed for class:  two # 2 pencils, a spiral notebook

Explore the land of the sacred text. As a good archeologist, we will roll up our sleeves and dig into the historical-geographical content that will help to bring the Bible to life.  Materials needed for class:  two # 2 pencils, a spiral notebook.

We'll walk in "Adam's" footsteps as we explore his commission. Did you know that God gave Adam the awesome job of learning about His creation? We'll use the adventure and creativity God put inside each of us to explore the world of Critters including tadpoles and mealworms. We'll categorize them. We'll dissect them. We'll observe them and we'll capture them. Critters will never look the same to us again!

Games Galore ($75) - Emily Pettinga                                                             10:30 – 12:30 pm
We will be learning card games, word games, board games, outdoor games. Each day you will learn three new games that you can take home to teach your friends and family!  Get excited for games of all kinds!

Hola Amigos! I, Maria, was born and raised in Mexico City and I love sharing my native language and culture. Come spend a week immersed in the increasingly important Spanish language and experience the vibrant flavor and diversity of Spanish culture in a fun and supportive environment.  Students will “journey” to Spanish speaking countries.  Children will enjoy a variety of activities such as art, songs and games.

Ages 10 - 12

 Cake Decorating ($75) – Kim Breuker                                                                      9:00 – 10:30 am
Not only is eating cake fun, but decorating cake can be just as fun!  Come join us as we learn the basics of cake decorating.  This includes learning how to create different flowers, leaves, clowns, and learning how to write on cakes for many occasions!  Materials needed for class:  frosting for day two and a cake for the last day (further instructions to come)

Using the principles from the Institute for Excellence in Writing students will acquire skills that will help them write effectively, quickly, powerfully and break through the writer’s block plus have a great adventure through another time period!  Materials needed for class:  two # 2 pencils, a spiral notebook

Mexico, City and I love sharing my native language and culture. Come spend a week immersed in the increasingly important Spanish language and experience the vibrant flavor and diversity of Spanish culture in a fun and supportive environment.  Students will “journey” to Spanish speaking countries.  The day will be spent immersed in the Spanish language and culture and include a variety of activities such as art, cooking, songs and games.  Instruction is formal, yet FUN, and will focus on the four language skills:  writing, reading, listening and speaking.  Bring a notebook and a pencil

Biblical Narrative thru the lens of the Twilight Zone ($75) - Todd Schenck    10:30 am - noon
Get ready to dig into the wondrous stories of the Bible! We will discover that biblical writers did not just tell the stories for the sake of spinning tales. There is a reason they chose certain events and a rational for how they have arranged them. This week long course will explore how biblical narrative works for meaning and significance. Analyzing the 1960’s cult classic Twilight Zones will aid in understanding the way the biblical author has crafted his work.

Essay Writing ($75) - Heather Hendricks                                                         12:30 – 2:00 pm
This summer class will teach students how to effectively develop and express ideas as they prepare for the writing portion of the SAT test.  We will teach methods to help develop their point of view, present their ideas logically and clearly and use precise language.  In this camp we will show tips and tricks for tackling the timed-opinion-based essay as well as strategies for writing a well crafted essay for the college bound student.  Materials needed for class:  two # 2 pencils, a spiral notebook.

Ages 6-9 

The Sky’s the Limit ($75) - Deb Pitsch                                                                         9:00 – 10:30 am
Give your young aviator a chance to spread his/her wings! Come explore the world of aerodynamics. We'll learn what makes things fly, why they fly, and how they fly. We'll create and fly rockets, rotors and airplanes. Students will create paper model airplanes and compete in their own Air Olympics. The sky really is the limit!

LEGO Learning ($75) - Kim Neideck                                                             10:30 am - noon
Using LEGO Early Machines set, young students have fun with simple models like a seesaw, rolling vehicle, hand-operated lift, and a merry-go-round. By playing with and manipulating the models, children will experience pulleys, levers, gears, and wheels and axles.  These activities are designed to actively engage students in scientific inquiry and provide them with technological know-how by giving them first hand experience with construction, mechanisms, energy, and programming techniques.

Art: Time Traveler II ($75) – Deb Pitsch                                                 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm
Become a Time Traveler through the Art World! We'll visit Leonardo da Vinci and take Mona Lisa where she thought she'd never go. We'll then journey to Spain and encounter Pablo Picasso and become a walking canvas, creating our own T-shirts. We'll travel closer to home with Andy Warhol as he takes us beyond the soup cans. We'll imitate MC Escher's tessellations but on place mats. Henri Matisse will help us tell art stories in our own personal book with colors.  Don't worry though about your time travels...we'll make sure we end back at Northpointe in 2008!

Novel Study ($75) - Megan Willink                                                                   9:00 – 10:30 am
No matter what kind of reader you are, this class is for you!  Whether you love reading, dislike reading, or want to improve your reading, you won’t want to miss this class.  As we read a novel, reading strategies will be discussed and applied throughout the week.

Powerful Power Point Presentations ($75) -  Karl Maaser                              9:00 – 10:30 am
This is a FUN class that will teach you how to create stunning presentations that look like they were designed by a professional.  Whether you want to show off your vacation, your hobbies, your family or you want an A on your next class presentation or you want to help your dad with his business presentation, this class will give you the tools to “WOW” the audience.   We’ll even teach you how to turn your presentations into photo albums, complete with music or narrations to distribute on CDs or DVDs.  Power Point is the number 1 program used worldwide for presentations.  Now is the time to learn a program that you are sure to use in the classroom and in business.

LEGO Learning II ($75) - Kim Neideck                                                          12:30 – 2:00 pm
Students explore scientific inquiry, physical science, technology, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and ScienceÒcreativity in a fun and engaging way. Using the LEGO & Technology Set, students discover problems and invent their solutions, behaving as scientists do – making their own discoveries along the way. Students will study forces and motion, simple machines, measurement, energy, and more.

Ages 13 – 18

Pattern Analysis ($75) – Elizabeth Straayer                                                      9:00 – 10:30 am
This course will look at patterns found in nature, games and puzzles, literature, and art and analyze the patterns mathematically. God’s created world is full of patterns and we can try to understand them better to understand his creation. Special attention will be given to the Fibonacci Sequence. There is no pre-requisite math course, so wherever you are in your math studies, you will fit in to this course.  

Weight Training/Anatomy ($75) – Kim Neideck                                               9:00 – 10:30 am
Get pumped for weight training! Calling all guys and girls, beginners and athletes. We will be learning muscle group location, opposing muscle groups and their function. We will also learn the benefits of strength training for guys and girls and how to properly strengthen each muscle group. This will be accomplished through group instruction, demonstration and by having each student perform a weight training program that is specific to their ability.  Students should come dressed in comfortable and modest clothing.

Ideas have consequences! How you see, understand and approach life and the world matters.  Learn how to discern as you shape and are being shaped by various worldviews.  Materials needed for class:  two # 2 pencils, a spiral notebook 

Algebra I Skills Review ($75) – Elizabeth Straayer                                         10:30 am – noon
This course is designed for students who have completed an Algebra I or Geometry course and are looking to brush up on some of the most important Algebra skills before moving on to their next high school math course. We will focus mainly on linear equation solving and graphing, linear inequality solving and graphing, and quadratic factoring.   

Family History ($75) - Pam Lasher                                                                 12:30 – 2:00 pm 
“Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise–that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth,” Ephesians 6:2-3.  One way to honor your parents and those who have gone before you is to find and write down their history ... to tell all who will come along what God has done for your family through the years. Are you interested in finding out how to go about recording your family's history?  Join this class.  (Parents, you may join your child at no additional cost.  The two of you may embark upon this journey together!) Some time will be spent researching family history sites online.  Bring to class—any family history you have recorded already, pens & pencils, optional: flash drive.

Want to prepare something tastier than a pizza roll?  Learn to make easy-to-prepare, delicious meals for your family and friends.  We'll explore various cooking techniques and basic nutrition.  You'll acquire skills that will never lose value.  You'll go home with some great recipes, and we'll enjoy eating our scrumptious creations each day!
Materials Fee:  $15
 

Primarily Physics ($60) - Deb Pitsch                                                               10:30 am - noon
Your young scientist will learn about force and motion by creating and modifying a catapult. They'll discover that force and motion create friction and they'll use friction to race different materials. They'll explore heat energy and compete to save an ice cube from extinction. We'll end the week with a Puff Mobile race as we wrap up with wind energy and conservation. Physics is Fun!!

Hands on learning about God’s great creation! We will be learning about how to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest a garden. We will learn about soil ph and taking care of your plants so little critters can’t get at them. Each student will make a small container garden which could be left to grow the rest of the summer as is, or could be transplanted in a garden of their own!

Ages 10 – 12

This class will help your child breathe life into his or her own words!  Instruction will be individualized to meet the needs of each student.  Class time will be spent delving into word choice, writing good leads & endings, and throwing out dull, drab words!  During the week, eight different children’s books will be read and discussed and coordinated with daily writing activities.  Come prepared for a hands-on week of learning!  Materials needed for class:  two #2 pencils, a spiral notebook
